Patients Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that individuals who stop using new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People buying these treatments need to be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a return to original mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

People who have stopped the medication describe a sudden return of cravings.

"I experienced a switch activating and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Use

Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is greater among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle support.
