Critical Role Campaign 4 Unveils the Soldiers Table

Ever since the premiere of Campaign 4, fresh DM the talented storyteller has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a diverse cast of heroes, and a exciting storyline including angels, fiends, and malevolent powers growing in strength within the city.

Note: Spoilers for the third episode of the new season lie ahead.

The Soldiers Table Revealed

The third episode finished on a dramatic pause and revealed the first table of heroes who will separate from the central cast to undertake their separate journey, separate from the additional parties.

This warrior group includes Teor (played by Travis), the nimble rogue (the talented performer), the fierce warrior (Whitney), the cleric (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan Vale (the actor).

Why Split the Party?

Given 13 cast members, it was clear from the start that keeping everyone at one table would be unfeasible.

Hence, the first four episodes of Campaign 4 serve as an Introduction, weaving together the personal journeys before branching into three distinct groups: Fighters, Planners, and Explorers.

Characteristics of the Warrior Group

According to the Dungeon Master, the combat-focused party is for adventurers who enjoy a typically action-packed fight-heavy gameplay experience where diplomatic options are few and far between.

Upon first impression, characters like the squeamish cleric Wicander might look out of place, but the events of the third episode show why these specific adventurers are best suited for the combat party.

Reasons to Leave

To begin with, the group has a clear idea where to proceed after a intense first encounter with the enemy group.

A former ally of Thjazi—whose passing started the narrative’s action—manipulated the foes for his selfish purposes, breaking into the hidden lair, attacking Thimble, and stealing all the enchanted items to dispose of.

The antagonist then cleared his debts and ran away to a secure base in the northern region, above the urban center, with Cyd Pridesire close behind.

Individual Reasons

Moreover, each member has a individual motive to leave the city the metropolitan area:

  • The agile hero, as the companion and closest confidant, wants retribution.
  • Kattigan knows the region and cautions that it is a dangerous place.
  • The strong character and The cleric, having resisted his relatives’ demands to kill Teor and instead saved him, have no safe haven.
  • However, their status as important members in the influential clan could help the team reach places they normally couldn’t.
  • Furthermore, Teor pledged a life debt to The savior for his rescue and will now follow him wherever.

Wanted and Hunted

In addition, all of them are hunted by the rulers that rule the city for a variety of reasons, making staying in the city dangerous:

  • The rogue and The character are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The warrior and The healer defied the powerful family and the army of fiends they are allied with.
  • The fighter is wanted dead by the family.

This means them no alternative but to head to Timmony in quest for Casimir.

Future Episodes

From episode three’s Cooldown, we learn that the Soldiers table won’t be around in the upcoming installment, leaving the rest of the players to assemble the Questers and Strategists groups.

Audiences can look forward to learning which characters will be assigned to which table in the story’s final introductory chapter, streaming live on the upcoming Thursday.
